Have you ever met someone who thinks they have all the answers? I met such a person while attending Cleveland State University in the early ’90’s. She was in my educational psychology class. She really rubbed me the wrong way because she thought she knew it all, and I knew I knew it all.(OOPS!) In all fairness, I wouldn’t know any better for almost a decade. (See About Me)
If you know Jesus, then you really do know someone who knows it all. As the perfect revelation of God, who existed before creation and is with God and is God (John 1), Jesus possesses all of God’s attributes – and knowing it all happens to be an attribute of God. And that is a good thing.
God knows the past, present, and future. You see, God created time, so He stands outside the creation timeline and sees it all. God knows what happened on the day you were born, and He knows what will happen on the day you will die. He has witnessed every moment in between – not just in your timeline, but in everyone’s timeline! That is difficult to wrap our minds around, because our brains are finite, and God is infinite (we will cover that attribute at a later date).
Let’s go back to past, present, and future. God knows all the family dynamics that played a part in birthing you. He knows, for instance, that your mother was a middle child and the only girl in a very traditional Italian family, who learned to be tough rather than expose her inferiority complex. He knows your father was the firstborn son of a large Irish family, who was brilliant, but a complete underachiever and suffered from a behavioral disorder. God knows the dynamics that produced your parents as well.
God knows that your parents lost two children to miscarriage before you were born and that you, as their only child, were overprotected from the world, but unfortunately not protected at all from their dysfunctions. God knows all of this and so much more. Even better, He uses it all as the raw material for the masterpiece His is working out in you.
You see, you were born for a purpose. God knows your history completely, and He knows where you are headed. Who better to walk with you down that path?
Not only does God know what has and will happen… He cares about each one of us as distinct, individual people. It is because He cares that His omniscience (the fancy, church word, for know-it-all) is a comforting factor.
HE CARES! He knows every thought, word, and deed you have ever had, said, or done…and He still cares! You can enter into a relationship with Jesus right now (if you haven’t already) and you can be you! You don’t have to put on an act, fearing that once the “real” you is exposed the relationship will end. Jesus wants to be in relationship with you, knowing all your dirty little secrets already. He knows more about you than you do. Who better to entrust your life, heart, and soul to? In this world searching for identity, Jesus is the only one who knows everything about you.
God knows everything! He knows how to bake cookies, He knows how to program a computer; He is the expert on all things – including you. Let Jesus be the Lord of your life. Follow where He leads. THE know-it-all is a good companion to have in an uncertain world.
